Baseball Drops Back-to-Back Double Headers to SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Tx. - Despite averaging 8 runs per game, Randall wasn't able to stop the even hotter offense produced by Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Friday and Saturday, and lost all four games to start the season. The Saints were lead by Senior Tyler Spoon, who had an amazing start to his final season hitting 7-14 with a walk over the weekend. Sophomore Casey Sykes lead Randall with 5 RBI's, while hitting 4-13. Freshman Saul Zapata started his college career off well, going 2-3 at the plate with the Saints lone homerun of the weekend. Randall mostly struggled on the mound to keep SAGU from scoring, though Freshman Ty Cody was a major bright spot, throwing two scoreless innings, striking out 3, and only allowing 1 hit.

Game One - After a scoreless first inning, the Saints got on the board first with 5 runs in the top of the second. Unfortunately starting pitcher Devan Pettyjohn struggled the next two innings giving up 4 in the second inning, and 5 in the third. Randall was never able to climb out of that hole, and lost 13-7. Grey Matejka and Weston Ward were the lone Saints to have multiple hits.

Game Two - The biggest loss of the weekend game in game two, as the Saints fell to the Lions 14-6. Once again Randall grabbed the lead in the top of the first, but the Lions responded with another 5 run inning in the bottom of the first, and never looked back. Another 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth put the game away. JW Moore went 2-3 with a walk for the Saints and also knocked in 2 RBI's. Five of the Lions runs were unearned thanks to a couple errors in the field for Randall.

Game Three - For the first time over the weekend the Saints didn't jump out to an early lead. Trailing 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Randall had a 5 run inning of their own started off by a Mason Baur single and a double from Grey Matejka. SAGU responded in the bottom of the fifth with a 5 run innning of their own, taking a 9-7 lead. Despite a run in each of the two final innings, the Lions hung on for an 11-9 win. Tyler Spoon went 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI's. Casey Sykes also had a great game going 3-4 and knocking in 3 RBI's of his own.

Game Four - The final game of the weekend saw the Saints crack 13 hits, and score 10 runs. Unfortunately the play in the field did not match the performance at the plate, as Randall committed 7 errors. Starting Pitcher Weston Bates was only charged with 3 earned runs, but thanks to numerous errors gave up 10 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. For the fourth game in a row the Lions had at least one 5 run inning at the plate, doing it back to back innings in the third and fourth innings. Despite being down 15-6 after four innings, the Saints refused to quit and battled back behind the strong performance on the mound from Freshman Ty Cody. Cody pitched two shutout innings, striking out 3 and only allowing 1 hit, but the comeback fell short and the Saints lost 15-10. Tyler Spoon had another great game, going 2-3 at the plate, and Freshman Saul Zapata knocked in a homerun while going 2-3 as well.

Next up the Saints will travel to Rogers State for a game Friday night, Feb. 3, followed by a double header on Saturday, Feb. 4.
