Saints Take One In Waxahachie, TX

Waxahachie, TX - The Saints traveled to Texas to take on SAGU for their first games of 2020. The Saints would go 1-3 on this road trip, a vast improvement from last season.

The first game was a bit rough, considering the common nerves of the start of the season. The Saints fell short with a score of 1-9 as the Lions ultimately played better. The Saints only produced four hits and one run.

Ryan Sanchez started the second game for the saints. He threw well, allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. He had one strikeout and zero walks. The Saints out hit the lions 13 to nine. Gentry Mullins went 2-for-4 at the leadoff spot. Zach Clarkson went 2-for-5 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Jace Elliot also had a big game going 2-for-4 with four RBI's. Cauy Hollis shifted the momentum in the sixth inning after hitting a big two-run home run. Louis Cottone Jr. relieved Sanchez in the fourth inning and dominated. Cottone threw 3.1 innings while allowing zero runs, two hits, and one walk. The Saints won this game 13-7.

Game three was a dog fight for the Saints. Evan Kating started the game on the bump and kept the Saints within reach. Kating pitched 4.2 innings while allowing four runs before being relieved by Dallas Cox. Cox pitched .2 innings in a quick relief spot. Lastly, Brandt Nading came in the game to try and save the game. Nading threw a strong 1.1 innings, allowing zero runs. However, a ground ball to end the game turned into an error, and the Saints lost 6-7. Cole Gaskey went 2-for-4. Mickey Sykes went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Cauy Hollis went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Brad Hoskins also went 2-for-2 with two RBI's. The Saints hit extremely well but ultimately fell short.

Game four was an all-out pitching duel. Jace Elliot threw a complete game striking out four batters and allowing just two runs. However, the Saints struggled to produce runs. It seemed as if they lost momentum after a home run from Cauy Hollis was taken away because of a new bat rule. Hollis used a white bat (he had been using for the whole series), which is now illegal and caused the home run to be changed to an out. The Saints tied the game in the fifth inning after Cache Garrett scored on an error by the Lions. The Saints could not contain the Lions in the bottom of the seventh as they walked it off with a guy on third and first. The Saints fell short with a score of 2-1.
