Randall Men's Basketball Defeats Top 25 NAIA DI Mid-America Christian

MOORE, Okla. - Randall Men's Basketball followed up their disappointing overtime road loss to NAIA DII Southwestern (Ks.) with an exciting last second 67-66 win over Mid-America Christian University (MACU). MACU entered the season ranked #22 in the NAIA DI Coaches Preseason Poll, and were the 2015-2016 NAIA DI National Champions. In a game where points were hard to come by, each team significantly dominated one half. Randall led 40-21 at halftime, but needed every bit of that 19 point lead to hold on to win. The Saints were led by Senior Xavier Hunter (Oklahoma City, OK/Del City High School), whose 18 points made him the only Randall starter in double figures. Junior Antonio Wilson (Oklahoma City, OK/Douglass High School), and Junior Brandon Askew (Tulsa, OK/Homeschool) provided 10 points each off the bench. Senior Trey Sneed (Edmond, OK/Edmond Memorial High School) led the team with 7 rebounds, while also scoring 9 points.

1st Half - Randall jumped all over the Evangels to start the game. Hunter made his second straight 3 with 14:30 remaining to extend the Saints lead to 16-4. A Brandon Askew 3 gave Randall a 21-6 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Saints continued to dominate on both ends of the floor for the rest of the half, leading 38-15 with one minute remaining. Back to back 3's for MACU from Justin Bogle and a layup by Junior Brad Ficken (Adelaide, Australia/Tatachilla Lutheran) ended the half 40-21 in Randall's favor. Hunter absolutely dominated the first half, scoring 16 of his game high 18 points in the opening half. Ficken had all four of his assists in the first half, leading Randall, and Sneed dominated the glass in the first grabbing 6 of his 7 rebounds. The Saints held MACU to 20% shooting from the field in the first, while shooting 48.5% on their end, including 50% from 3.

2nd Half - After a sluggish opening for both teams, back to back turnovers to start the half, MACU began their comeback immediately, slowly climbing back in the game. With 15 minutes remaining, the Evangels had already cut the lead to 10, 44-34. Randall struggled offensively, while not stifling the MACU offense the way they did in the first half. The Saints would hold their lead until the 5 minute mark, when MACU took a 57-59 lead. After getting down 57-61, Randall would go on a 9-0 run to take a 66-61 lead. Antonio Wilson led the charge, scoring 5 of the 9 points. The Evangels would come back to tie the game, and after a Sneed layup as time was running out went in and out, a MACU player attempted to call a timeout despite being out, leading to a 1 shot technical foul. Brandon Askew stepped up and made the game deciding free throw with under a second remaining, and the Saints were victorious 67-66. Askew led Randall with 7 second half points, and Freshman Jordan Downs (Fort Worth, TX/Everman High School) had 3 second half rebounds for the Saints.

Next up for Randall is a home game on November 2 against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 8:00pm. You can come cheer on the Saints in person, or check out the live stats and live stream on rusaints.com
