Big Second Half Helps MBB Sweep Champion

Randall men's basketball defeated #9 Champion Christian 80-75 last night.

The Saints struggled in the first half allowing 48 points to the visitors on 54% shooting. Champion dominted the rebound battle out rebounding Randall by 15 in the opening 20 minutes, while also forcing 9 Saints turnovers. Coach Byrd on the first half, "We had no rhythm on either end of the floor. We struggled with their athleticism and physicality."

In the final 20 minutes it was a different Randall team. Attacking on both ends of the court, and matching the physicality of Champion. The Saints were able to string together multiple defensive stops which spurred multiple mini runs to cut the lead to under 10 with 13 minutes left in the ball game. Offensively Randall attacked the rim relentlessly, putting Champion in foul trouble resulting in the Saints shooting the bonus at the 14 minute mark of the 2nd half. Ultimately tying the game at 69 with just under 4 minutes left in the game. After a Champion timeout, the Saints ended the game on and 11-6 run to complete the comeback win 80-75.

Coach Byrd on the win, "The second half was a great example of who we are as a basketball team. These guys are relentless and just don't give in. We have preached all year that our defense spurs our offense. When we take pride in the way we defend and rebound we are capable of some really fun things. 18 point second half comebacks are pretty rare, so we are going to enjoy it tonight and then get ready for another big game Thursday at home."

Braeson Barrs-Richardson led the Saints with 23 points on 6 of 13 shooting and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line, he also chipped in 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Senior captain Eli Riley added 10 points, a game high 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Blestin Miller added 13 points off the bench.

The Saints return to action at home on Thursday, weather permitting, at 7:00pm against CBS-Houston. Senior Day is Saturday at 3:00pm against Arlington Baptist..
